Five Minute Friday: where we write with abandon for 5 minutes. Normally we all join up at Lisa Jo’s but this week we’re hanging out with Crystal Stine. So come on over and join the fun!
We hadn’t been here more than a few hours when the first knock came at the door. And from then on it was a flood of family and new friends. Within a week we had boxes unpacked and the house pulled together in anticipation of the coming holiday and the bucket-load of people who would be joining us. Filling our backyard, scattered across the patio, kids running wet and wild and high on cousin love in the background. They made themselves at home in my kitchen, like we’d thrown these parties together a million times before.
Then came the text messages. Like I’d always been a part. Like I have lived here for my whole life and am not the transplanted cousin-in-law. Trips to the park? Let’s go. Pizza and a little shopping? I’m in. Day at the pool? Yes please! New pedi? Love it!
It is so heartwarming, this feeling that I’ve belonged since the very beginning with these people whom I have known and loved and know call friend. The relationships are easy. The conversation flows. They love my children as their own. We are comfortable, breathing in that sigh of acceptance.
There are no pretenses. No acts. No false bravado. It’s just simple. It’s just real. It’s just belonging. And it’s beautiful.
So thank you, to Kayla and Steph and Codi who have accepted me into this ring of friendship. You girls are the best!
